Although Long QT was ‘discovered’ in 1957, it took a long time to uncover the reasons the QT interval is prolonged without medication artificially prolonging it. It wasn’t until 1980 that Schwartz first suggested that some patients with LQTS might have a normal QT interval. The gene causing Long QT Type 1 was nearly uncovered first but was the actually just off with the KCNQ1 gene and it actually wasn’t until the year in 1996, after Long QT 2 and 3 were genetically tracked that Long QT was accurately identified.
In the grand scheme of things Long QT is a very new condition that scientists are still learning a lot about.
